I attended a 4-day barrel racing clinic in the beginning of June. The clinic was with a multiple time world champion. I learned a ton over those 4 days. I will make a post on a later date about the tactical side of barrel racing knowledge I took home with me.
Today, I would like to discuss what I learned outside of turning three barrels.
I have attended a few clinics in the past and I have also paid for my fair share of private lessons. Each of these expereinces have been worth it. However, this is the first clinic I have attended that allowed me to obtain skills that not only helped me in the moment but allowed me to go home and continue to improve.
I believe a few things played a large role -
(1) With the clinic being 4 days, it was an immersive experience. I was able to focus on getting better at barrel racing for 4 FULL days. There was very little down time. I was either actively doing a drill, being coached, or watching others and learning through their actions and feedback.
(2) Credibility. I knew that the clinician and her assistant KNEW what they were talking about. There was no doubt in my mind about their knowledge. Therefore, I did not have to questions whether or not I should carry this knowledge into my daily actions as I work horses at home. This allowed me to remain even more focused on just getting better.
Overall Lesson:
Paying the price for credible information and instant feedback from someone who you know without a doubt has the knowledge to make you better is invaluable, especially when it is an immersive experience. Pay for it every time!
